Morganite vs Rose Quartz – How To Tell The Difference?

In order to understand the difference between these two stones, we can look at the color, shape, pattern, clarity, and more. Below we’ll describe all these aspects in detail.

Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of both morganite and rose quartz is highly different, making it its main distinguishing factor. Morganite has a variety of beryl minerals. This mineral is a beryllium aluminum silicate with traces of manganese, lithium, and cesium. However, rose quartz has amounts of iron, chromium, and manganese in its chemical structure.

Color

The morganite stones come in different colors, such as peach, soft pink, violet, and salmon. The pinkish color of this gemstone is a result of the traces of manganese, lithium, and cesium in its chemical structure.

On the other hand, the rose quartz color ranges from rose-red to very pale pink. The coloration of this gemstone is a result of the traces of titanium, manganese, and iron in its chemical structure. However, there are microscopic inclusions known as hematite which are also relayed to cause the pale pink color.

Clarity and Pattern

Morganite is commonly known as the type2 gemstone because they have very few inclusions that are not so visible viewed with the naked human eye. Hence, it brings out an attractive, translucent luster when polished. Morganite exhibits typical hexagonal growth patterns.

Like morganite, rose quartz is translucent, but they are never transparent entirely. They exhibit a turbid and milky appearance, which reduces their value. However, they show beautiful inclusions, making it desirable; this is known as the star effect.

The rose quartz has no definite shape, as it is taken as a thick slab and then cut to give a three-dimensional shape of a puffed heart.

Hardness

Morganite has a good hardness of about 7.5 – 8.0 from the Mohs scale. On the other hand, rose quartz has a scale of 7.0 on the Mohs hardness scale, and thus it’s known as a hard stone.
