Clear Quartz vs. Rose Quartz – How To Tell The Difference?

In order to understand the difference between these two stones, we can look at the color, shape, pattern, clarity, and more. Below we’ll describe all these aspects in detail.

Chemical Composition

Both rose quartz and clear quartz are members of the quartz group of minerals with a silicate chemical composition. This crystal is formed as a result of magma cooling. Just like when water turns into ice, the silicon dioxide crystallizes to form quartz.

The difference between these crystals is that rose quartz contains some type of iron ore, such as titanium, iron, or manganese, which causes this stone to be pink.

Color

The difference between these stones isn’t difficult to spot; clear quartz is entirely colorless and rose quartz is pink, as the names suggest. The shades of rose quartz will vary from very light to darker rose pink, depending on the amount of manganese, titanium, aluminum, or phosphorus impurities in the stone. Additionally, rose quartz that has been left in the sun will have faded to a light color as a result of the UV rays.

Pattern, Clarity and Shape

Clear quartz is a transparent stone with a vitreous (glass-like) luster. The crystal may also show some impurities or cracks within the stone, making it have an ice-like appearance. Clear quartz never has bubbles, so if yours does, it is likely the stone is a fake.

Rose quartz is naturally translucent to opaque depending on the number of impurities in the stone. The luster is also vitreous, similar to clear quartz. The stone also has white spots and lines as the result of the iron impurities within the stone.

Lastly, rose quartz grows in clusters, while clear quartz crystals form in points.

Location

Both quartz crystals are found in different locations all over the world. The leading producers of clear quartz are mines found in Brazil and Russia. Rose quartz can be found in Madagascar, Brazil, Sweden, and Sri Lanka.

Hardness

Both stones belong to the same mineral family, hence share the same mineral hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. If you’re unfamiliar, the Mohs scale of hardness determines a stone’s hardness by measuring how scratch-resistant it is. According to this scale, a stone can scratch any other mineral with a lower score. For reference, talc is a 1, whereas diamond is a 10.

As a result of this hardness, both stones are durable and fairly resistant to scratches and damage. The crystal’s mineral hardness makes them highly preferable for use in jewelry and ornaments.

Care

All crystals and gemstones should be cared for properly in order to derive the best of their benefits.

Both clear quartz and rose quartz have no problem withstanding a bit of water, so feel free to give it a rinse with some soap if you want to clean it. These stones are also fine in salt water and can be left in the sunlight. However, keep in mind that any stone left to soak for extended periods of time will eventually turn dull, especially in salt water. Additionally, rose quartz will eventually fade as a result of being left in the UV rays of the sun.

For energetic cleansing and recharging, clear quartz is special; it does not accumulate or retain negative energies after use and can cleanse and restore its energies to their original state itself. If you do want to recharge it to amp up its high vibrations, leave it in the sun for an hour or two or in the moonlight overnight.

Unlike clear quartz, rose quartz does not have self-cleansing abilities. One of the best ways to cleanse and recharge this stone is by sound. Rose quartz crystals can be buried in soil or left in the company of cleansing crystals, like clear quartz or selenite, for recharging.
