Mahogany Obsidian Properties
Mahogany obsidian is a natural volcanic obsidian glass that has a normal black obsidian glass base with bands of mahogany-colored bands and swirls that are created by a high concentration of iron.
The amount of mahogany color in a mahogany obsidian crystal is based on the amount of iron that was present in the felsic lava when the volcano it came from erupted. The iron could have also been picked up from the Earth’s crust the lava flowed over as it made a path to where it eventually cooled rapidly into the mahogany obsidian volcanic glass.
Mahogany obsidian is a moderately hard stone with a hardness of 5 – 5.5 (Mohs).
How is Mahogany Obsidian Formed?
Natural mahogany obsidian is rhyolite in composition that forms where volcanic felsic lava flows. This composition contains a high amount of silica and iron that cools very quickly. During this rapid cooling process, other crystals are not able to form, so it results in a volcanic obsidian glass stone. Had this same mixture cooled much slower or had more gravitational pressure applied to them, other crystals could have potentially formed.
Mahogany obsidian is different from other obsidian stones as it has higher concentrations of iron which results in the mahogany-colored bands in the black obsidian.
Where to Find Mahogany Obsidian
The largest deposits of mahogany obsidian are currently located in Afghanistan, Japan, Mexico, various countries across South America, and various states across the United States where volcanic activity occurred.
Since obsidian is formed wherever volcanic activity occurs, mahogany obsidian can be actively discovered in new areas all over the world. As more volcanos erupt, new deposits of mahogany obsidian will be formed.
