What Chakra Is Carnelian?

The reason we associate carnelian with the sacral chakra is for two reasons: its abilities as well as its color.

As you might know, each chakra represents a different part of ourselves and every crystal has different abilities to help in those areas. There are 7 chakras, which you’ll find below, from lowest to highest.

  • The root chakra (Muladhara): our sense of stability and security.
  • The sacral chakra (Svadihsthana): the emotional body, sensuality and creativity.
  • The solar plexus (Manipura): self-esteem and your overall personal power.
  • The heart chakra (Anahata): love, for ourselves and the world around us.
  • The throat chakra (Vishuddha): communication, self-expression and trust.
  • The third eye chakra (Ajna): our intuition, perception and overall awareness.
  • The crown chakra (Sahasrara): the connection to the divine, transformation and clarity.

Carnelian’s superpower is that it fills us with warmth and excitement. Working with carnelian may make you feel more creative and full of life. As a result, carnelian is associated with the sacral chakra.

Carnelian can help open up your sacral chakra and is a great stone for anyone looking to heal their this part of their life.
If you’ve experienced abuse or trauma, this stone can help make you feel safe in your own body and surroundings again.  The sacral chakra is also responsible for fertility and the reproductive organs. Those looking to conceive, or already carrying a child could benefit from keeping a carnelian near.
Besides this, carnelian has the ability to ground and make us feel safe. Consequently, we can also associate this stone with the root chakra.

Apart from its abilities we can also look at the color. As every chakra has its own color, we can simply match a crystal to the chakra:

  • The root chakra is red, but black stones are also a good match.
  • The sacral chakra is orange.
  • The solar plexus is yellow.
  • The heart chakra is green, but also matches with pink stones.
  • The throat chakra is blue.
  • The third eye chakra is indigo.
  • The crown chakra is violet, but also matches with stones that are clear or white.

As you can see, the orange carnelian matches perfectly with the sacral chakra.
However, depending on the type of carnelian that you have, it might have additional associations. Continue reading if you want to know the chakra for the different types, as well as the benefits of carnelian to the chakra and where to place carnelian on the body for it to be most effective.

What Chakra Is Red Carnelian?

Unlike conventional carnelian, this type has a deeper red colour. As a result, you might not be surprised to hear that that this type has a stronger connection to the root chakra.

Red carnelian is an even bigger motivator than normal carnelian and is remarkably grounding. As a result, it is a great stone for those who have great ideas, but also have trouble making them happen in the real world. Red carnelian can help you make the right steps to achieve material things.

Because of its grounding properties, red carnelian is for of you feel like you spend most of your time working with the higher chakras. For those working with spirituality, we often find ourselves spending more time working with the higher chakras, to do with the divine and our intuition. Red carnelian can help you come back down to earth and make you feel comfortable and secure in the physical world.

What Chakra Is Yellow Carnelian?

Just like typical carnelian, yellow carnelian is associated with the sacral chakra. However, its yellow color also means we can work with it to unblock our solar plexus chakra. This chakra is all about confidence and self-esteem.

Consequently, yellow carnelian is a perfect stone for when you could use a little extra confidence boost. For example, during a presentation, job interview or date.

Carnelian Benefits To The Sacral Chakra

A blocked sacral chakra can manifest in different ways.

Physical issues are shown in the area of the sacral chakra; the lower abdomen. Think of issues with the reproductive system, urinary or kidney problems, and hip and lower back pain. Emotionally, you might feel detached, lonely, or a lack of creativity. You may also find yourself having a low libido

As carnelian is perfectly connected to the sacral chakra, it can help unblock and heal these issues. Please beware that crystals are never a replacement for medical help. Always go to a doctor if you experience serious issues. You can then work with your carnelian to support treatment.

Where To Place Carnelian On The Body?

Where you put your carnelian completely depends on what you use it for. Below you’ll find some guidelines for both jewelry as well as meditation, depending on what you are looking for.

As a general rule, it is best to keep the stone on the skin closest to the chakra is it associated with. If you are meditating with the carnelian and like to lie down, just place it on stomach below the navel. You can also keep it in your hand if you prefer.

Be careful about which hand you hold it in; there are two different opinions on this.

Some say the left hand is your receiving hand, whereas your right is your giving hand. Depending on what you are looking for from your crystal, you can place it on either of those sides. In this case, this left-in and right-out is said to just be the flow of energy through the body which never changes.

Others however, believe that this flow of energy changes depending on if you’re left or right-handed. Your dominant hand (the hand that you write with) is your giving hand and releases energy. The non-dominant hand is the receiving hand.

Carnelian can be placed on either side, depending on what you are looking for. Do you want to ignite your passion (receiving hand) or would you like to be courageous or confident (giving hand)?

As you can see, there are some different views. Personally, I would recommend trying out both sides and see how you feel. Crystals are meant to be used intuitively, so use this to determine which side works for you.

If you prefer to wear it as jewelry, a bracelet or ring is going to be your best option, as carnelian is connected to the lower chakras. If you really want to wear it as a necklace, this is fine too but make sure you wear it on your skin and the chain is long.
