Strawberry Quartz vs. Rose Quartz – How To Tell The Difference?

In order to understand the difference between these two stones, we can look at the color, shape, pattern, clarity, and more. Below we’ll describe all these aspects in detail.

Chemical Composition

Both stones belong to the quartz family of minerals, with a chemical formula consisting of silicon dioxide. They also both have some form of iron ore, like goethite or hematite, to create the pink color.

Strawberry quartz also contains mica, which looks like glitter, while rose quartz does not. If you’re familiar with aventurine – it is the same type of sparkle. If that does not ring a bell, have a look at the picture below. You’ll see the glitter in the strawberry quartz but not in the rose quartz.

Color and Transparency

Strawberry quartz often exhibits a darker pink shade compared to rose quartz but can also be just as pale. The best way to differentiate between these stones is that strawberry quartz is clear quartz with darker or pinker spots, meaning the overall color is uneven. Rose quartz has a relatively even pink color throughout.

For strawberry quartz, the richness of color is an important factor in the pricing of the stone. Lighter shades have the lowest value.

In terms of transparency, both stones can be translucent to opaque, depending on the number of inclusions.

Hardness

Both stones are relatively hard, rating 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness. If you’re unfamiliar, the Mohs scale of hardness determines a stone’s hardness by measuring how scratch-resistant it is. According to this scale, a stone can scratch any other mineral with a lower score. For reference, talc is a 1, whereas diamond is a 10.

Quartz is relatively durable, meaning it’s a great variety of crystals to use in jewelry and other objects.

Care

Although they’re relatively durable, be careful when handling and storing these stones to prevent damage.

We recommend cleaning your stones by either running them under tap water or cleaning them with a damp cloth. If you’d like, you can use some detergent as well. Make sure to dry the stones afterward. Although it won’t cause immediate problems, we do not recommend leaving stones to soak, as this can turn them dull or brittle.

Apart from physically cleaning the stones, you might want to clear them from negative energies. This is highly recommended if you use them for their metaphysical properties.

The reason for this is that these stones absorb low vibrations. Every month or so, you want to remove these energies from the stone so you can continue to use it. After cleansing, it is recommended you also recharge the stones to make sure they are full of positive energy to share with you.

Strawberry and rose quartz can be cleansed and recharged by moonlight or using cleansing crystals like selenite and clear quartz. The stones can also be left in clean salty water for a few minutes to tune it to its original vibration, but again, beware that this may cause damage in the long term.

We do not recommend leaving any type of quartz, including strawberry and rose quartz, in the sun for long periods, as they are likely to fade when exposed to direct sunlight. However, feel free to let them charge in the sun for 15-30 minutes or so.
