Calcite has a more consistent color and is often opaque, while fluorite is known for its color zoning and is translucent or transparent. Calcite looks and feels waxy, and fluorite has a glass-like shine. The former is also slightly softer. Green calcite is mostly used for balance, while fluorite is used for clarity.

Green Calcite vs. Green Fluorite – How To Tell The Difference?

In order to understand the difference between these two stones, we can look at the color, shape, pattern, clarity, and more. Below we’ll describe all these aspects in detail.

Color

Calcite comes in a variety of colors, among them being green calcite. The range of colors includes white, colorless, black, yellow, red, blue, and pink.

Green calcites have a soothing pale green color. The shade of color is almost identical to green fluorite. The green shade can range from deep to light green. The stone may also be characterized by blue or yellow stripes occasionally.

Green fluorite is one of the members of the fluorite family. Fluorites come in a variety of shades, and is often dubbed ‘the most colorful crystal in the world’. Although fluorites come in a wide array of colors, purple and green are the most popular species.

Green fluorite’s color varies from light to dark and can be characterized by color zoning, where some areas may have a deeper or lighter color than others. Some parts of the fluorite may have no color at all. Additionally, you may find multiple different colors within one stone.

Pattern and Clarity 

Green calcite is semi-transparent to opaque in clarity. The stone is highly reflective, has a waxy shine, and is slippery to touch.

Green fluorite has a smooth appearance, often with a marbled or stripped pattern.  The stone is also transparent or translucent in clarity. This is the only stone that has perfect cleavage from four different dimensions, meaning the stone breaks into perfect cubes, which is also how it is sometimes found. The word fluorescence is derived from this stone, which means it glows under ultraviolet light. Keep in mind, that this isn’t the case for all fluorite.

Hardness

Green calcite rates 3 on the hardness scale, while green fluorite rates a 4.
If you’re unfamiliar, the Mohs scale of hardness determines a stone’s hardness by measuring how scratch-resistant it is. According to this scale, a stone can scratch any other mineral with a lower score. For reference, talc is a 1, whereas diamond is a 10.

With these scores, fluorite is able to scratch calcite. So, if you have a piece of (confirmed) fluorite, the best way to check is to scratch the undetermined stone. If it gets scratched, it is likely to be calcite. If not, it might be fluorite.

You could also use a copper penny (scoring 3.5 on the scale) to check. The penny should be able to scratch calcite, but not fluorite.

Chemical Composition 

Green calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral that forms as a result of calcium-rich rain. Over time, the water that has hit the ground will evaporate, while the calcium is left behind. This then forms into calcite.
In addition to calcium, calcite often has metal inclusions. These cause the stone to have different colors. For green calcite, this is likely due to the inclusion of malachite.

Green fluorites form from slow cooling or high heating of magma. These crystals form in veins and crevices of sedimentary rocks. Fluorite is made up of calcium fluoride, which results in a colorless, transparent crystal. Often, this stone has metal inclusions, creating an array of colors.

Location 

Green calcite mainly comes from Mexico. Green fluorite mines are found in China, South Africa, and Mexico, among other parts of the world.  

Care 

Because of these stones’ low hardness rating, we need to be careful when handling them. The stones can be cleaned by using a moist microfiber cloth, but make sure to dry them afterward. Because of their soft nature, the stones cannot be cleaned by running them under water or leaving them to soak. This will either dissolve or break them. Acid treatments are also not recommended.

Apart from physically cleaning the stones, you might want to clear them from negative energies. This is highly recommended if you use them for their metaphysical properties.

The reason for this is that these stones absorb low vibrations. Every month or so, you want to remove these energies from the stone so you can continue to use it. After cleansing, it is recommended you also recharge the stones to make sure they are full of positive energy to share with you.

Fluorite and calcite can be cleansed and recharged by moonlight or using cleansing crystals like selenite and clear quartz. We do not recommend leaving them in the sun, as they are likely to fade when exposed to direct sunlight for longer periods. It is also best to keep these stones away from salt.
