Lepidolite vs. Amethyst – How To Tell The Difference?

In order to understand the difference between these two stones, we can look at the color, shape, pattern, clarity, and more. Below we’ll describe all these aspects in detail.

Chemical Composition

Lepidolite is a lithium-rich mica group mineral. It is formed when aluminum, lithium, and potassium bond together. Amethyst belongs to the quartz family of minerals. Its main component is silicon dioxide.

Color

Lepidolite ranges from pink to purple, while Amethyst can be pale to reddish-purple. Lepidolite is not only available in purple color but also offers a range of white, colorless, gray, red, pink, and yellow-colored varieties.

Amethyst may also exhibit blue and red secondary hues when observed under a light source. Amethyst is also available in light violet, deep purple, lavender, and pink shades.

Pattern and Clarity

Lepidolite has perfect cleavage and an uneven fracture. Its luster is vitreous to pearly. It also has a white streak and is transparent to translucent in clarity. On the other hand, Amethyst shows no cleavage and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. The crystal displays a glassy to vitreous luster. Its streak is white and is also translucent to transparent in clarity.

Hardness

Lepidolite is a very soft stone. It rates 2.5 to 3.5 compared to Amethyst, which ranks 7 on the Mohs hardness scale.  Lepidolite will fracture, damage, and scratch easily, therefore, requiring a lot of care.

Care

Lepidolite should not come into contact with any chemicals, acids, or bleach because it alters the color and composition of the stone. The best way to clean the stone is by using warm water and mild detergent.

Overexposure to the sun also alters the stone’s color. For energy cleansing and recharging, non–invasive methods are highly recommended because the rock is quite soft. Sound and smoke cleansing are some of the best ways to remove unwanted energies from the stone.

Lepidolite is recharged by leaving it in the presence of charging crystals like clear quartz and selenite.

Amethyst is quite tough; hence safely cleaned using water and soap. It can also be safe in ultrasonic cleaners, except for fracture-filled and dye-treated ones. Amethyst does not do well with heat; hence steam cleaning is not advised. Recharge your stone with moonlight.
