Larvikite vs Labradorite – How To Tell The Difference?

In order to understand the difference between these two stones, we can look at the color, shape, pattern, clarity, and more. Below we’ll describe all these aspects in detail.

Chemical Composition

Larvikite is a feldspar mineral. The feldspar content gives the crystal its blue color and special color effects. Feldspar contains potassium, calcium, and sodium. The stone is also rich in titanium, albite, and plagioclase. The alkali feldspar and plagioclase inclusions are believed to give the stone the silver flash and the famous blue coloration. Labradorite is also a feldspar mineral that is calcium enriched.

Color

Larvikites are light to dark bluish-gray gemstones with golden brown overtones. Some species are clear blue and nearly black. Labradorite, on the other hand, comes in a variety of colors. The stone is available in blue, black, yellow, gray, colorless, green, and brown.

Larvikite and labradorite may also show the schiller color effect. This is the mix of colors seen when the gemstones come in contact with light. Labradorite also displays an attractive display of colors when light interferes with the arrangement on the surface of the stone. This phenomenon is known as labradorescence, which is a great deal in the charisma of this stone.

Pattern and Clarity

Larvikite has cleavage and a pearly luster. Its clarity can be translucent, opaque, or transparent. Labradorite, on the other hand, has a vitreous luster and an uneven fracture. Its cleavage is perfect in two directions and is translucent to opaque in clarity. Labradorite may also display needle-like black inclusions. The schiller phenomena are seen in both larvikite and labradorite stones.

Hardness

Both stones range between6- 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. This suggests that the rocks are not very resistant to damage and wearability. The cleavage in both rocks makes them susceptible to breaking; hence should be handled with care.

Care

Larvikite can be cleaned using lukewarm water at least once a week. Another way to cleanse and recharge the gemstone is by leaving it under running water or in the presence of other charging crystals like clear quartz.

Labradorite is also washed using water. Precaution should be taken when handling these stones because long water baths will disintegrate the stone. Labradorite is also cleansed and recharged by sunlight and moonlight.
