Brecciated Jasper vs Red Jaspe – How To Tell The Difference?

In order to understand the difference between these two stones, we can look at the color, shape, pattern, clarity, and more. Below we’ll describe all these aspects in detail.

Chemical Composition

The two stones come from the jasper variety of quartz. These gemstones mainly contain silicon dioxide, but may have a percentage of metal oxides and foreign materials. These inclusions affect the pattern, color, and appearance of the gems.

Color

Jasper varieties rarely display uniform coloration. Most jasper stones are banded, multicolored, or spotted. Brecciated jasper is red with dark bands, while red jasper is brick red. Brecciated jasper is available in yellow, brown, orange-red, and gray colors. The stone may also have white banding formations or white spots.

Red jasper can also range from orangey-red to brownish red. The color of these gemstones will result from the concentration of other foreign elements. The red color in a brecciated jasper comes from the hematite inclusions, while red jasper gets its color from the iron content within its composition.

Pattern and Clarity

Jasper stones are generally opaque with a trigonal crystal system. The stones will vary in luster. Brecciated jasper has a clear polish, while a red jasper displays a dull glow. The dark banding formations on the brecciated jasper result from the hematite content.

Brecciated jasper is patterned with colorless, black, beige, or brown inclusions. The red jasper also shows banding formations and patterns on the stone’s surface. The stone often has black bands and streaks on the crystal.

Hardness

Brecciated jasper rates 6.5- 7, while red jasper ranks 8th on the Mohs hardness scale. Red jasper is more favorable for jewelry because it’s not susceptible to scratching and damage.

Care

Unwanted energies can be cleansed from a brecciated jasper by moonlight, sunlight, or running water. You can also leave the stone in the company of cleansing crystals for a few hours. At home, clean your gemstone with a soft dry cloth to preserve its polish.

Red jasper also does well with natural energy from the moon and the sun. The stone can also be buried in the soil for recharging and cleansing. The stone can also be cleaned manually using a mild detergent and lukewarm water.

Location

Brecciated jasper can be found in reasonable amounts in Brazil, India, Russia, and France. Red jasper is also found all over the world. The most significant sources are Uruguay, Egypt, Canada, and Madagascar.
